Jorge Wahbeh

  • Method.

Jorge Wahbeh

Cultural promoter of Venezuelan design

Industrial designer Entrepreneur Design thinker Design educator Delegate of Venezuela · BID26

His project is Venezuelan design. He promotes it at home, through the Instituto de Diseño de Caracas, business and community, and abroad, on the great international stages. For him, design is a way of giving value to who we are.

Professional commitment

Venezuelan design that reaches beyond our borders: an identity recognized, and recognizable, around the world.

Teaching commitment

Learning by doing: bringing theory and practice together and opening design and art to more people.

Personal commitment

A holistic approach to sustainability, through permaculture.

Designer and entrepreneur

Kenco · since 2006

An industrial designer who turned his craft into a company: today, more than 100 people work at Kenco.

He graduated in Industrial Design from the Instituto de Diseño de Caracas in 2002. In 2006 he co-founded Kenco, which began as a design studio and grew alongside the needs of the Venezuelan market. Today he is the CEO of a company with a 4,000 m² facility, more than 100 employees and 10 business units across four sectors: textiles (garment making, caps, printing, embroidery and leatherwork), printing (offset, digital and bookbinding), large-format printing, and design (product, graphic, packaging and interiors, with its own production workshop).

From 2014 to 2019 he was design advisor to id.real in Madrid, helping its founding team grow the studio, build its design team and make product decisions that improved the final result. With id.real he took part in projects recognized with international awards.

His work brings two perspectives together: that of industrial design, which asks how each piece is made, and that of service design, which asks what the person in front of it experiences. The goal is not only that something looks good, but that it leaves something good in the place and in the people.

Design thinker

Permaculture · Service design

Before objects, he designs systems that sustain and regenerate themselves.

For him, design well understood, in all its branches, makes life kinder: it humanizes spaces, reduces waste and helps us ask the right questions before looking for answers. He describes himself as pragmatic in his solutions and deeply committed to new generations of designers and to the future of our natural resources.

His way of thinking about design comes from permaculture, which he studied in 2004 with the Permaculture Association in Britain and which proposes three simple gestures: observe, integrate and waste nothing. Applied to design, it means asking where each material comes from, who benefits from each decision and what remains when the project is over.

He puts it into practice at the Fundación Granja Idea Verde, which he co-founded in 2010: an agroecological project in Cajón, in the Gran Sabana of Bolívar state, which, with the support of the United Nations Development Programme, works to restore areas damaged by mining and to train Indigenous communities in sustainable ways of producing food and energy. In 2019 he added service design to that perspective, at the DesignThinking Academy in Amsterdam.

That is why he is so interested in where craft meets technology. Many of today's most interesting innovations happen there, and he wants his students in the front row.

Quíbor is a good example. As a final-degree project tutor, he guided Juan Cortizo's thesis: a collection of lamps and speakers made with carpenters from Lara and conceived as a circular system to regenerate the dry forest. It won a Special Mention at SaloneSatellite in Milan, and Cortizo considers him one of his great mentors.

Design educator

Director of the IDC since 2018

He leads the institute where he trained and prepares it for the design that is coming.

Since 2018 he has been director of the Instituto de Diseño de Caracas, an institution founded in 1983 and devoted solely to teaching design. In 2019, together with Karen Cortés and Hernán Ferrer, also alumni, he took on the task of carrying its legacy forward.

His leadership changed the way students learn. The institute, known as La Caracas, deepened the learning-by-doing approach inherited from the Bauhaus and began developing real projects with companies, industries and foundations. The campus tripled in size, enrollment grew by 40%, the Fashion Design school was born, and the institute launched a scholarship program, talk series with national and international talent and an internationalization plan with alliances to take Venezuelan design beyond our borders.

In more than 40 years, the IDC has trained more than 3,000 designers, about 85 a year. Jorge has been class sponsor in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023.

And he has not left the classroom: he teaches the Final Degree Project in the Industrial Design school, guiding the project that closes the program, and Creative Thinking in the Illustration school.

The design ecosystem

Local ties · International connections

Design grows when the institute, industry, crafts and the world are in conversation.

For him, the Instituto de Diseño de Caracas does not end at its walls. So he works in two directions at once: inward, building ties with companies, artisans and the creative community of Caracas; and outward, opening doors so that Venezuelan talent is seen around the world and the world comes to Caracas.

Local ties

Within the country

  • Industry. Students work with companies from early on: it is the foundation of learning by doing.
  • Crafts and territory. Work with the artisans of Quíbor and Guadalupe, in Lara, gave rise to an Industrial Design field program that connects design with local knowledge.
  • Method. The IDC's Extension unit brings design to companies and institutions through training programs.
  • Community. Caracas Design Week brings together designers, students, alumni and cultural partners from the city every year.
International connections

Out to the world, and back

  • Conexiones program. He created it to bring world-class designers and promoters to Caracas, especially from Ibero-America, with talks and workshops open to the whole community.
  • Ibero-American Design Biennial. As delegate, he takes Venezuelan design to Madrid. In 2024 the country won two awards and five mentions.
  • Milan. Quíbor, a thesis under his supervision, received a Special Mention at SaloneSatellite.
  • Cultural alliances. With the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, the IDC hosted Maurizio Corbi, senior designer at Pininfarina. His master classes led to scholarships for four Industrial Design students.

Delegate of Venezuela

Ibero-American Design Biennial

He takes Venezuelan design to the great meeting place of Ibero-American design.

As delegate of Venezuela to the Ibero-American Design Biennial (BID), he supports the country's project submissions. His criteria are broad: he looks for the best of Venezuelan design wherever it comes from, whether a studio, a company, a social organization, a collective or a university.

He was delegate in 2024 and is again in 2026: the Biennial presents him on its official list of delegates as an "industrial designer and promoter of Venezuelan design." In 2024 Venezuela won two awards and five honorable mentions, which, in his view, helps give value to the country's design and identity.

In 2026 he presents ten projects at Matadero Madrid, from November 2 to 7, that respond to Venezuelan reality from the street, the territory and the community.

"This space is unique in its style. It brings together countries that share an identity, a language — Spanish and Portuguese — and social, cultural and political challenges. We are very diverse, but at the same time there is a thread that unites us. And for me, design is an important part of that."
